Long Beach staycation: Hyatt Regency, Aquarium of the Pacific, Queen Mary - May 27-28, 2018

On Sunday morning, Norwegian Bliss was back in Los Angeles. We headed to the Garden Cafe buffet for breakfast.

ate too much yesterday, gotta slow down

After our meal, we had no issues getting off the ship or through immigration. Disembarkation went smoothly as everyone was only allowed to bring carry-on baggage; no need to depart by various colored groups as on regular cruises. Bye bye Norwegian Bliss, hope to sail you some other time!

We planned on meeting my brothers and their families at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach around 9:30am. What I suspected when we first arrived at the World Cruise Center was true, that it would be difficult to catch an Uber there due to the area being very industrial. My request in the Uber app was not picked up for several minutes. Kaleb and I ended up hopping into a cab, which were plentiful, and got to the aquarium. My brother Allen and his family were already there, with my brother Edmund's family arriving shortly afterwards. We bought discounted combo tickets that included admission to both the aquarium and the Queen Mary.

The Aquarium of the Pacific is very comprehensive, with a variety of exhibits including sharks, seals and touch pools. It's similar to large aquariums in other cities, so I didn't take too many pictures here. I recommend it for families. It was a bit crowded due to it being Memorial Day weekend.

We walked across the street to eat at Bubba Gump. I forgot to take pictures of my meal but it was as expected of a touristy restaurant. Our server was very friendly and provided the kids with lots of activities such as coloring and folding boats.

the diver spoke to us through a mic in her mask

After lunch, we walked to the bus stop to catch the free Passport bus over to the Queen Mary. It took a while for the one we wanted to arrive, but we eventually made it. I had never been inside the Queen Mary - the last time I walked by her was a few years ago while attending a cruise inspection. The interior is as expected of a vintage oceanliner, with small spaces not conducive to photo taking. You can pay to stay in the cabins just like a hotel. The exterior was in good condition. A wedding was being set up for later in the afternoon. Carnival Imagination was docked at the nearby Long Beach Cruise Terminal.

Our Queen Mary ticket included an attraction, so we chose to visit the Princess Diana exhibit. Her life story was presented through pictures, keepsakes, letters, media articles and clothing she wore at certain events. No photos were allowed once inside.

Afterwards, we took an Aqua Bus back to the aquarium. The fare was only $1 per person and provided a short adventure for everyone.

Once back at the aquarium (parking tickets had been validated for a flat-rate cost when we exited before lunch), we found the cars in the garage, then drove over to the nearby Hyatt Regency Long Beach.

Another hitch of the trip...one of the three rooms I reserved was missing, and the front desk agent told me that the hotel was sold out. What?!? I had all three confirmation emails on hand and were listed on my Hyatt account before I left for the trip. The front desk called the main office to sort it out and I also had to call World of Hyatt customer service to re-attach the Club Access certificate, with lots of hold time. While everything was being fixed, the other two rooms were processed so that everyone else could settle in and go to the Regency Club Lounge for refreshments. In the end, it took about 40 minutes to get the third room in order - kudos to the Hyatt Regency Long Beach front desk team and manager for resolving the issue. No one could explain what exactly happened, but I'm thankful that I didn't have to stay at a different hotel or smash into one of the other rooms.

The Regency Club Lounge had limited seating. There was a decent selection of refreshments, though bar items were not complimentary.

For dinner, we walked down the street to see which restaurants could take a party of nine without a long wait. We settled on California Pizza Kitchen. I hadn't been to one in quite a long time and I was surprised to find a variety of food on the menu besides pizza.

On Monday morning, the sky was overcast, but eventually it burned off in the afternoon. We had breakfast in the lounge. It was a nice spread, including smoked salmon, bacon and scrambled eggs. It was a bit crowded due to the small space.

After breakfast, I checked out of the rooms as the guys brought all the luggage to the cars in the parking garage. The kids had fun playing video games in the lobby. We then strolled the hotel grounds and found some food trucks at the convention center but nothing appealed. We walked across to Shoreline Village and had lunch at Tequila Jack's, a Mexican restaurant. I forgot to take pictures of the food but it was good and had hearty portions.

thanks to Angela...
...and Edmund for swapping out taking photos :)

After lunch, we headed back to the Hyatt Regency. The hotel is in a great location, and with all the pedestrian walkways and bridges towards downtown and the harbor, you can't help but want to take a stroll.

Edmund dropped us off at Long Beach airport. Kaleb and I had an uneventful flight back home.

boarding available from the back

We'll all be seeing each other again soon...on a family cruise to Alaska on Emerald Princess, roundtrip Seattle...stay tuned!

Saturday morning, we had breakfast at The Local to try it out. The atmosphere was similar to eating at a casual-dining restaurant and is open 24 hours.

After breakfast, I attended a general session in the Bliss Theater, which wasn't full. Perhaps people were stuck in a long line waiting to meet Wyland, the artist who painted the hull of the Norwegian Bliss.

Remember I mentioned in the previous day's post that I hoped we could get into "Q", the Texas BBQ specialty restaurant for lunch? It was open to everyone from 12-2pm. Well, the line for it meandered all the way down the ship, and was cut off before we could join. The last people in line were to wait until 2pm to get seated, and it was only 12pm. So we ended up attending the Seafood Extravaganza at the Garden Cafe. I had never seen so much seafood on display at a buffet! The event may have been specially held for the inaugural. I stuffed myself with so much delicious shellfish that I couldn't stand to eat shrimp, crab or lobster for months afterwards.

too many plates of this
and this

After overdosing of cholesterol, we walked it off by visiting the rest of the ship that we missed on the first day.

Norwegian Bliss' Observation Lounge was impressive. It was such a huge space (cabins were sacrificed to create it) and even offered a mini-buffet. Kaleb would hang out in here while I was out doing travel agent things. The expansive views from the lounge is perfect for Alaskan cruising.

Some of the specialty restaurants were not being used for meetings, so I got a few photos. The children's areas looked nice. Then we found the arcade. Many of the games were free (for the inaugural of course). Too bad we didn't see this last night.

we did a lot of the car and cycle racing
and tons of hoops

We toured cabins on display, ranging from inside to mini-suites. I won't include all of them here, just some interesting ones.

If you are traveling solo, you can opt to stay in a studio cabin, which has access to a common area stocked with snacks and beverages. These cabins would be priced less than if you paid for a regular interior cabin at 200%. There are studios that connect to each other if you need this type of arrangement. Note that all studios are interior. I thought they were nice and cozy.

I thought this "trough" sink in the mini-suite was cool:

The most luxurious cabins on board, located in The Haven, were available for viewing today, but only escorted tours. The Haven has its own pool, private restaurant and common area. The two- and three-bedroom villas are popular with families. There is even butler service and other luxuries.

I was surprised to find that the second bedroom of the 2-bedroom villa contained a double sofabed instead of a real bed. Perhaps it was meant for younger children.

The deluxe owner's suite is bigger than my house! The bathroom is so beautiful.

The common areas for Haven guests were quite nice.

snacks and beverages also available

The Haven villas would be perfect for guests/families who enjoy ultra-luxury cruising, but still desire the entertainment and amenities that a large cruise ship offers, such as children's clubs, Broadway-style shows, and night life.

After the escorted tour, we grab some drinks at the District Brew House. When we got back to our cabin, there were more commemorative gifts delivered.

We didn't feel like eating in the main dining room, so we opted for dinner at The Local.

For dessert, we stopped by Coco's sweet shop. One complimentary menu item per guest was offered for the inaugural (except milkshakes, celebration platter and chocolate fountain). Our server informed us that the ice cream sundae would be a smaller version of the paid one.

Bliss by night

We spent the rest of the night walking around the ship and stopped by the arcade. By now, other guests had found out the machines were free and the place was more crowded.

Our second night of the cruise was over - much too short to enjoy all that Norwegian Bliss had to offer. We also found out too late that the laser tag and go-karts were complimentary to experience during the inaugural - oh well, got to leave something new to do whenever we sail on Bliss again!

Norwegian Bliss is a wonderful option for Alaska cruising. The Observation Lounge is an ideal place to take in all the scenery while staying warm (and fed by the mini-buffet). If you're not already busy doing excursions at the ports, there are so many activities to do on the ship. There are plenty of specialty restaurants to choose from, which are usually included in the "Free at Sea" promotion. Solo guests can choose to stay in a studio. Haven guests have their own pool, courtyard, lounges, and restaurant. There is something for everyone on the Bliss, whether you are traveling by yourself, a couple, or multi-generational family. If you are interested in cruising on Norwegian Bliss (or any other cruise), contact me anytime! (info at bottom)

We'll be back in Los Angeles tomorrow morning and meet up with my brothers and their families in Long Beach for the rest of the Memorial Day weekend...stay tuned!
